Classical Consortium started over ten years ago with a call from God on Jennifer's heart. Read our interview with Mrs. Burns to find out more about her journey while leading CC.
Why did you start CC?
I started CC because I felt called by God to start a school with Him as the foundation. Through twists and turns He made it very apparent that I was supposed to create a “school” that supported homeschooling families who wanted to provide an exceptional education for their children. It is funny how God works in and through us. I never imagined myself being a stay-at-home mom, let alone a homeschooling mom. I really feel I'm the least likely person to start a school, but we know that God equips us for every good work.
Why classical education?
I believe very strongly in classical Christian education because I believe that it is the kind of education that puts God at the center. Classical education has an understanding of how a child's brain works, which then enables them to do more than what the world considers them capable of doing.
What do you love about CC?
There's nothing I don't love about. I absolutely adore CC, and my eyes are welling with this question. I love that it is a way that I can see God work through our program. I love walking alongside our teachers and staff members who give so much of themselves, who love the Lord, who love these kids, who love the subjects that they teach. What a blessing it is to work with them. I love our families. They are wonderful dedicated men and women who really understand what's important in this world. And I adore our kids. They are the BEST, and they surprise me and bless me. I'm so proud of them and who they are. I can't pick just one thing.
How have you grown as a result of CC?
I feel like God has helped me see the value and importance of relationships. My children have really great adult influences through CC. These relationships are really important because when you homeschool you rely on yourself to be the main influencer of your children, and you are. But I think CC really adds so beautifully to that through godly teachers and friendships. As a parent, having people in my life who are a little bit further down the journey than I am is really important.
Since it's summer, that means you don't have any work for CC, right?
*Laughs* Oh sure. You caught me right in the middle of doing teacher confirmation letters. Summer is always busy getting ready for the new school year, planning orientation, building class lists, reviewing syllabi and assignment schedules, fielding phone calls, and all of the preparation that comes before the school year starts.
When you're not at CC, what do you do for fun?
What my kids and my students laugh about is that I'll often say to them, “Today is going to be so much fun!” Their response will be, “Mom fun, teacher fun, Mrs. Burns fun, or real fun?” My idea of fun is teaching formal logic and reading about classical education. I love being in the classroom with our kids and just getting to know them better, and honestly letting them get to know me. I really enjoy spending time with my family. I like to take walks around the lake that we have in front of our house, being in the fresh air.
Which Bible Character inspires you?
There are so many, but I'm going to say Noah. Noah is a real inspiration for having open ears to hear God and unwavering obedience to follow God's call, and then reap the blessing of having Him provide all that He promises.
Jennifer believes strongly that her life’s purpose is found in Galatians 6:9-10. She is happily married to David Burns and the mother of three boys. She founded Classical Consortium Academy in 2006 and serves as CC's headmaster.
